New Year Update 2017
January 19th, 2017
Sorry things have been a bit quiet here at the Knoxwood website, we have had a fairly manic Christmas & New Year…
December brought a huge re organisation of our current staffing, now everyone has settled in a little we hope things might get back to normal.
Our plans for this year include a lot of upgrades…
Initially we intend to refurbish our small pond area, where injured swans can recuperate after treatment. This will include ground leveling and re-landscaping it to make it more accessible for disabled birds as well as a repaint and re-seed.
Our seagull accommodation is also going to be relocated to a different area of the sanctuary, it will be bigger, more spacious and easier for the fit birds to take off from.
Our current seagull accommodation is going to be dismantled and the wire paneling will be used to repair the goat & deer paddock!
All of the above projects can be carried out with minimal cost (a bit of seed, paint and diesel for the digger) and hopefully will make life a little bit easier on site.
Our larger plans however will be slightly more costly…
Wildlife Rehabilitation Unit & Parrot Accommodation: Knoxwood has always, until recently had a rehabilitation unit. This unit was where wildlife could be housed between hospital and aviary / release. The rehab had large indoor hospital pens with outdoor access and facilities for larger mammals. We had a combined parrot unit / rehab until the massive amount of parrots we have been brought in took over and left no room for wildlife!
We plan to build a separate unit just for the parrots and convert the existing unit into a 100% wildlife dedicated rehab. Plans have been submitted and passed and all that now remains is to find the money!
Warm Room: Following the massive success of the incubator we recently added to our hospital we hope to add a further 2 small incubators to our cause. I have already earmarked a space in our hospital to house these fantastic units and will be fundraising for their purchase very soon! The makers of these units have also offered us a 15 % discount, which on £500 pieces of kit is really worth having!
