M6 Swan Accident
March 24th, 2016
On Tuesday Knoxwood received a call from the local police to say there was a swan in distress on the M6 motorway causing chaos in the traffic. George & Glenn set off ASAP to pick up the distressed bird who had managed to drag himself into a service station sliproad and was flanked by a police escort to ensure his safety. Thankfully he was a simple pick up and did not give George & Glenn the run around too much! He was taken back to Knoxwood and treated for shock where it was found he had a seriously broken leg.
We think that the swan had landed on the road, believing it to be a river (a common mistake for water birds) and the weight of the bird hitting the road at high speed broke the bone in his leg.
Thankfully the team from Belle Vue Vets in Wigton were able to operate on Wednesday after the swan had stabilised and fitted an internal pin through the bone.
The swan is not out of the woods yet, it will be several weeks of recuperation, antibiotics and monitoring at Knoxwood before we have a verdict on the leg, which must not move too much in case the leg rotates and damages the repair before it heals.
